All-Southern Conference, 1945
Team Captain, 1945
A native of Albemarle, N.C., "Bear" Knotts was a four-year lineman for the Blue Devils from 1943-46. The two-way guard earned All-America and All-Southern Conference honors in 1945. He was also the team captain his junior year.
All of the individual honors came a year after he was an integral part of one of Duke's greatest teams. The 1944 squad captured the Southern Conference crown and then defeated Alabama in the Sugar Bowl by a 29-26 score. Knotts earned third team All-America honors by the College Press that season.
