Glenn E. "Ted" Mann deserves to be mentioned in the same context with names like Amos Alonzo Stagg, James Naismith, Eddie Cameron and Wallace Wade for there is no question that this man was a pioneer in his field. A charter inductee to the College Sports Information Directors Hall of Fame and past president of that organization, Mann was long considered the "dean" of sports publicity directors. Raised in Burnside, KY, Mann came to Greensboro in 1926 and was named sports editor of the Greensboro Record at age 19. While there, he scooped the world press and broke the story of the boxing rematch of Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney. He came to Duke in 1927 and it was 1966 before they could drag him away from his typewriter on the Methodist campus. Promoting all sports at Duke, Mann earned All-America recognition for 32 football players, six basketball players and numerous others in track, golf and baseball.
