Ed Newman had a distinguished dual-sport career at Duke, lettering three years as a lineman for the football team and earning three more letters as a heavyweight for the wrestling squad.

A Syosset, N.Y., native, Newman won Al-ACC honors and All-America laurels as an offensive lineman in 1971, then earned a spot on the All-ACC team as a defensive lineman in 1972. In wrestling he was the ACC heavyweight champion in 1970 and 1971 while serving as team co-captain in 1972.

Newman earned even more notoriety as a professional athlete, toiling for more than a decade as an offensive lineman for the Miami Dolphins of the NFL. A sixth-round draft choice, Newman enjoyed four selections to the Pro Bowl (1981-84) and was first-team All-Pro in 1984. He played in two Super Bowls and was a nominee for NFL man of the year in 1983.

Newman had a string of 56 straight starts interrupted by a knee injury in 1982. Another knee injury cut short his 13th season with the Dolphins in 1985, when his sterling career came to an end.
