Eric "The Red" Tipton was co-captain of the 1938 Iron Dukes. Named to the 1938 All-America team, he is also a member of the National Football Hall of Fame and is perhaps best known for his punting wizardry.

In the Blue Devils final game of 1938, before 40,000 fans and in a blinding snowstorm, he led the team to victory by punting Pittsburgh inside their 20-yard line a total of 15 times. His punting exhibition enabled the underdog Blue Devils to remain unbeaten while holding their opponent scoreless and led to a blocked punt that gave the Iron Dukes a hard-earned 7-0 victory.

Tipton played pro baseball for the Philadelphia A's and the Cincinnati Reds before entering coaching.
