Basketball All-America, 1930
Former Major League Baseball Star

Bill Werber was the first Duke basketball player to earn All-America honors in 1930. He was also an outstanding baseball player and went on to play 11 years in the major leagues. He spent time with both the New York Yankees and Giants, the Boston Red Sox, the Philadelphia A's and the Cincinnati Reds.

He played in two World Series with the Reds in 1939 and 1940. He led them to victory in 1940, batting .370 in the Series against Detroit. He led the league in stolen bases in 1934, 1935 and 1937.

A native of Berwyn, MD, Werber played third base during most of his career and had his best batting average in 1934 of .321.
