Bob Wheeler, a native of Lutherville, Maryland, had an illustrious track career for the Blue Devils. He was a member of the 1972 U.S. Olympic Team and ran the 1500 meters in the Munich Summer Games.

Wheeler was the 1970 ACC cross country champion as a Duke freshman, then later that year claimed the NCAA indoor track championship in the 1000 meters. He also won the ACC mile and the 880 during the outdoor season, and finished second in the NCAA in the mile.

As a sophomore he repeated his conference cross country championship but suffered an injury during the NCAAs and missed the indoor season. He returned to action in the spring and finished third in the NCAA 1500 meters, then qualified for a berth on the Olympic team with a third place finish at the Olympic Trials. His bid for a medal ended in the semi-finals at Munich.
