Coming to Duke from Norman, Oklahoma, where his father was athletic director and head football coach at Oklahoma University, great things were expected of Jay Wilkinson the moment he stepped on campus. He didn't disappoint anyone. The first time he touched the football in his varsity career, he ran 63 yards for a touchdown on a punt return. Sports Information Director Ted Mann ranked him right up there with Ace Parker and compared his running style to that of former great George McAfee, aptly calling it "scintillating and exciting". Wilkinson finished his Duke career with nearly every kick return record in the books and was named first team All-America by several publications. He also was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Football Player of the Year in 1963. His over-all per play average was an amazing 8.5 yards every time he touched the football.
