LEXINGTON, Va. – The Duke wrestling team placed sixth at the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on Saturday, finishing with 14.0 team points. North Carolina won its second consecutive title, finishing with 90.5 team points. N.C. State would finish second with 64.0 team points, Virginia was third with 61.0 team points, Maryland placed fourth with 48.0 team points and Virginia Tech finished fifth with 44.5 team points.
The Blue Devils had three wrestlers finish in the top five of their respective weight classes. Sophomore Konrad Dudziak finished third at 197 pounds, redshirt freshman Aaron Glover placed fourth at 165 pounds and redshirt freshman Dan Fox was fourth at 184 pounds.
125: Sophomore Kellan McKeon dropped his opening round match to North Carolina’s Bobby Shaw, 3-0. Shaw went on to capture second place at 125 pounds. In his consolation match, McKeon fell to N.C. State’s Jeremy Hartrum, 9-7.
133: Freshman Michael Degli Obizzi lost to top-seeded Eric Albright, 14-2, in his first round bout. Albright would go on to finish third at 133 pounds. Degli Obizzi then dropped his consolation match to N.C. State’s Garrett Cummings, 6-3.
141: Junior Philip Wightman fell to Maryland’s Alex Krom, 7-2, in his opening round match. Krom would later place third at 141 pounds. Wightman then lost to Virginia’s Nick Alparone in his consolation match, 11-7.
149: Junior Daniel Shvartsman dropped his opening round bout to Virginia’s Drew Dipasquale, 7-4. Dipasquale went on to capture second place at 149 pounds. Shvartsman then lost his consolation match to North Carolina’s Chris Ramos, 8-4.
157: Freshman Addison Nuding lost to top-seeded and eventual 157-pound champion Kody Hamrah of N.C. State, 15-7, in his opening round match. Nuding then lost to North Carolina’s Deon Barrett, 4-2, in his consolation match. Barrett would finish third in the 157-pound weight class.
165: Redshirt freshman Aaron Glover fell to N.C. State’s Obie Simpson, 9-8, in his opening round bout. Glover would then defeat Virginia Tech’s Tucker Michels, 6-5, to advance to the third-place bout. Simpson would defeat Glover for the second time on the day, claiming third place with a 6-3 win.
174: Senior Levi Craig defeated N.C. State’s Rick Brownlee, 4-3, in his opening round match. Craig would then fall to top-seeded and eventual 174-pound champion Alex Maciag of North Carolina, 8-5, in his second match of the day. In his consolation bout, Craig lost to Maryland’s Mike Maceroli, 3-1. Maceroli would finish fourth at 174 pounds.
184: Redshirt freshman Dan Fox dropped his opening round bout to Virginia’s Kyle Narkiewicz, 13-5. Narkiewicz would go on to capture second place at 184 pounds. Fox would then defeat Maryland’s Luke Stauffer, 4-3, to advance to the third-place match. In the third-place bout, Fox would fall to North Carolina’s Justin Dobies, 5-2, to finish fourth on the day.
197: Sophomore Konrad Dudziak had the best outing for the Blue Devils. After dropping his opening round match to North Carolina’s David Dashiell, 7-4, Dudziak won two straight matches to capture third place. Dudziak pinned Maryland’s Jerry Afari in 4:23 before defeating Virginia’s Brent Jones, 6-5, in the third-place bout.
HWT: Freshman Wade Van Sickle fell to Virginia’s Nick Smith, 5-1, in his opening round match. Smith would go on to finish third in the heavyweight division. Van Sickle then lost his consolation match to N.C. State’s Jainor Palma, 2-0.
