DURHAM, N.C. – The month of February saw 19 Duke student-athletes attend eight different local elementary schools to promote the Read with the Blue Devils program.

On Feb. 2 Holly Kokinda (cheerleading), Kyle Butler (baseball), and Anne Marie Gordon (track and field) attended Easley Elementary School.

Another group of Duke student athletes headed over to Morehead Montessori Elementary School. That group included Bryan Morgan (football), Dennis O'Grady (baseball), and Stephanie Shyu (women's fencing).

On Feb. 3 Jessica Davlin (women’s track and field) and Katharine Bodnar (women’s swimming and diving) attended Bethesda Elementary School to read to the students.

On Thursday, Feb. 5 Gretchen Miller (women’s soccer), Jane Alukonis (women’s soccer) and George Pearkes (football) visited Club Blvd. Humanities Magnet Elementary.

On Monday, Feb. 16 Alex Hassan (baseball), Marvin Marcelin (football), Gordon and Kokinda read to kids at Eastway Elementary School.

The Read with the Blue Devils program made two stops on Wednesday, Feb. 25. Rose O'Connor (swimming and diving) and Butler headed over to C.C. Spaulding Elementary School, while Laura Suchoski (field hockey), Ian Kalis (men’s soccer), Graham Oxley (men’s soccer) and Morgan visited RN Harris Elementary School.

The last trip of the month was made to Southwest Elementary on Feb. 26 with Molly Mack (women’s soccer), Joe Pedevillano (baseball) and Marcelin reading to third graders.

The Read with the Blue Devils program is intended to aid area teachers by providing reading incentives for third graders in Durham. By reading for 15 minutes for 12 nights, a youngster is able to reach various levels and earn Blue Devil gifts along the way.  Among the prizes given out are autographed team photos, posters, t-shirts and chances to meet Duke student-athletes at various functions.

This is the 17th year that the Blue Devils have done the Verizon Read with the Blue Devils program.
