Duke Against Boston College

Duke trails Boston College 2-8-0 in the all-time series after the Eagles have swept Duke in each of the past two series. Duke’s two wins over Boston College came in 2006 when the Blue Devils took two of three from the Eagles to win the series. With just 10 all-time meetings, Duke has played Boston College fewer times than any ACC opponent.

Active Blue Devils vs. BC

First baseman Nate Freiman has had the most success against Boston College of any active Blue Devil, raking a .400 batting average with three home runs and six RBI in six games against the Eagles. Alex Hassan is also batting .364 in six games against Boston College, while Jake Lemmerman brings a .500 clip for the series into this weekend’s meeting after going 5-for-10 last year. Catcher Matt Williams is the only active player to have start all nine games against the Eagles. Andrew Wolcott has seen Boston College more than any other Duke pitcher, tossing 11.0 complete inning while logging a 4.91 ERA. No active Duke pitcher has beaten Boston College, though Michael Ness boasts a 0.00 ERA through 8.2 innings. Ness has fanned eight Eagles while walking just one during that span.

Duke Against Ranked Teams

The Blue Devils are currently 4-5 on the season against ranked teams with a series win over No. 1 North Carolina. Duke took games two and three against the top-ranked Tar Heels 5-4 and 10-9 after falling 8-5 in the opener. Duke also took a game from No. 6 Miami 2-0 and another from No. 17 Clemson, 10-7. Senior starter Andrew Wolcott won all three games against North Carolina, Miami and Clemson on Saturdays. Duke has won at least two games over top-25 opponents in each of the last three seasons, including four in 2008.

Leading Off

• Duke is 27-16 overall and 10-11 in the ACC  after losing games one and three against Maryland last weekend and a mid-week game at Elon on Wednesday.

• Duke is currently on a two-game losing streak, but has not lost more than two games in a row all season.

• At 10-11 in the ACC through the first seven conference series, Duke has four more ACC wins right now than they did at this point in 2008. The Blue Devils went 6-13-1 over their first seven ACC series last season on the way to a 10-18-1 conference finish. Duke has not been swept by any team this season and has won three conference series over Virginia Tech, No. 1 UNC and most recently, NC State.

• This weekend’s series will be a showdown between the two best defensive teams in the ACC. Duke leads the conference in fielding percentage (.979), while the Eagles are ranked second (.973). Additionally, Duke and Boston College have struck out the fewest times of any ACC team with Duke leading the way with 204 punchouts and Boston College in second with 243.

• Duke has struck out the fewest times of any team in the ACC. The Blue Devils have whiffed just 204 times in 43 games for an average of 4.7 strikeouts per game. Boston College has the next fewest strikeouts in the conference with 243 in 40 games (6.1 per game).

• Duke closer Alex Hassan tied the school’s all-time saves record after picking up a four-out save against No. 17 Clemson. Hassan is second in the ACC with eight saves this year and has 13 for his career, matching the school record set by Vaughn Schill (1997-99) and Mark Sikorski (1984-86).

• Duke catcher Matt Williams has caught 13 base runners stealing this season for the second most in the ACC. Williams is holding opposing runners to a 64 percent success rate on the base paths, which is the second-lowest among all ACC catchers.

• Nate Freiman is one of 10 remaining candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, which honors one student-athlete from six major sports based on their excellence in four areas: Classroom, Character, Community and Competition.

• Duke is 25-0 when leading after the sixth inning, thanks to a bullpen that has racked up 11 wins and 14 saves. Duke leads the ACC in saves with closer Alex Hassan ranking second among individuals with eight saves.

• Starter Andrew Wolcott has the second-lowest ERA in the ACC at 2.48. The 6-6, 240 pound senior right-hander has given up more than two runs in a game just three times  in nine starts and more than three in a game just once all season. Wolcott (5-3) has defeated all three top-25 teams he has faced this season.

• Duke has turned 41 double plays this season, which is already seven more than the team turned in all of 2008. Second baseman Gabriel Saade has played a key role in Duke’s ability to turn two, as the junior has helped out on a team-leading 30 of those.

• Nate Freiman has launched 12 home runs this season after hammering 11 in 2008 to become the first Duke player since Richard King (1995-96) to hit double-digit home runs in consecutive seasons. Freiman ranks tied for third on Duke’s all-time home run list with 35 career bombs.

• Offensive, defensive and pitching notes available in attached PDF. Complete notes also include season statistics, player career highs, player game logs and career statistics.
