DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke golfer Tom Lefebvre was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroism and valor in a recent ceremony at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The award was approved by the Commanding General Marine Forces Central Command for the President of the United States. The award is given to those who have demonstrated significant heroic actions and leadership in combat. Lefebvre is one of the few Marine officers to receive the award. He received a similar award following his actions in Ramadi, Iraq in 2006.

The Bronze Star stems from his personal leadership in the face of considerable odds in Afghanistan in 2008. He exposed himself to intense enemy fire and led his men in the destruction of a significant Taliban position.

Lefebvre was a letterman on the golf team at Duke from 2003-05, placing 17th in the 2003 ACC Championships before playing in the 2003 NCAA Championships at Stillwater, Okla.

The day he received the award was his last day on active duty in the Marine Corps. He and his wife Chelsea are moving to New York to begin his pursuit of a medical degree and her residency.
