DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke Blue Devils completed a three-game sweep over Mount St. Mary’s on Sunday at Jack Coombs Field, defeating the Mountaineers, 10-2. This is the first time the Blue Devils have started a season 3-0 since 1998, when that Duke squad won its first 15 games of the year.

Duke grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With one out, center fielder Jonathan Anderson doubled to right center before moving to third on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Jimmy Gallagher. After a walk to first baseman Nate Freiman gave the Blue Devils runners on the corners, third baseman Brett Bartles laced an RBI-single through the left side to score Anderson.

Mount St. Mary’s would tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the second before Duke scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. Following a walk to catcher Matt Williams, shortstop Gabriel Saade reached second on a two-base error by Mountaineers’ center fielder Ivor Hodgson. Three batters later, Anderson sent a two-run single to right center, scoring Williams and Saade.

The Blue Devils extended their lead to 4-1 with an RBI-single by Williams in the bottom of the third. A four-run fourth inning pushed Duke’s lead to 8-1. After Saade singled to start the inning, the freshman shortstop stole second and then advanced to third when the throw from catcher Josh Vittek scooted into center field. Left fielder Christopher Manno and second baseman Ryan McCurdy drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Anderson then drew a third straight walk to bring Saade across the plate. Following a Mountaineers’ pitching change, Gallagher sent a sacrifice fly to right to score Manno and move McCurdy to third. Freiman then laced an RBI-single up the middle, scoring McCurdy and moving Anderson to second. Bartles capped off the inning with an RBI-single through the left side to score Anderson.

The Mountaineers added a run in the top of the fifth before the Blue Devils scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to cap the scoring at 10-2. Anderson led off the inning with a single down the right field line before advancing to second on a passed ball. Gallagher then singled through the left side to give Duke runners on the corners. A Mount error followed, allowing Freiman to reach first and Anderson to score. Gallagher and Freiman then pulled off a double steal to give the Blue Devils two runners in scoring position. Two batters later, designated hitter Tim Sherlock drew a walk to load the bases. Williams then capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Gallagher.

Freshman Alexander Hassan (1-0) earned his first career victory in his first collegiate appearance, limiting the Mountaineers to one hit in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Freshman Jeremy Gould had a solid outing in his first career start on the mound, holding Mount St. Mary’s to two runs on five hits in 4.2 innings of work. Freshmen Will Currier and Jonathan Foreman both went one inning without allowing a hit in relief of Hassan.

Anderson led the Blue Devils at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Bartles went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while Freiman and Williams had two RBI apiece and Gallagher had one RBI.

The Blue Devils will return to the diamond on Friday at 3 p.m. for the first game of a three-game series against St. Bonaventure at Jack Coombs Field.
