URBANA, Ill. – Senior Henrique Cunha of the Duke men’s tennis team played his way into the round of 16 for the fourth consecutive year in singles at the NCAA Individual Championships Wednesday at the Kahn Outdoor Tennis Center.

A product of Jaú, Brazil, Cunha cruised into the round of 16 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over No. 32 Jared Hiltzik of Illinois. Cunha, a four-time All-American in singles, advances to the singles round of 16 for the fourth consecutive year of his career. For the season, Cunha holds a 33-4 mark, including 16 wins over opponents listed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.

In the round of 16, Cunha will face No. 17 Kyle McMorrow of Washington in a match-up scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. ET.

Also taking the courts in singles action was freshman Michael Redlicki, who fell to No. 25 Marcos Giron, 7-5, 6-3. The match had to be moved indoors to the Atkins Tennis Center, due to inclement weather in the area. A product of Hawtorn Woods, Ill., Redlicki closes his rookie campaign with 31 wins in singles, placing him in eighth-place in the program’s all-time charts for most singles wins by a freshman.

In the first round of doubles action, the dynamic duo of Cunha and sophomore Raphael Hemmeler battled to three sets before edging Ohio State’s 12th-ranked tandem of Kobelt and Smith, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The win for Cunha and Hemmeler is their 37th of the season, as the duo now sits one win shy of second-place all-time single season wins by a Blue Devil duo in the program’s history. Cunha reaches the round of 16 for the third time in his illustrious career.

Cunha and Hemmeler return to the courts Friday to face Florida State’s Cotrone and Davis in the round of 16 at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Also in doubles action were Redlicki and sophomore Jason Tahir, who fell, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. In the first set, Redlicki and Tahir remained on serve, before winning a break at 4-2. They ultimately won the set, 6-2, before falling in the final two sets. Redlicki and Tahir conclude their season with a 24-10 record.

Singles and doubles action at the NCAA Individual Championships continue with the round of 16 Friday at 11 a.m. ET.
