Blue Devils Open Strong at Wake Forest Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Duke men’s tennis team went 5-2 in singles and compiled a 2-0 ledger in doubles Friday to open play at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational, hosted by the Demon Deacons at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.

Both Blue Devil tandems in the tournament secured places in Saturday’s quarterfinals with first-round wins Friday. Freshman TJ Pura and sophomore Daniel McCall teamed up to defeat UNC Charlotte’s Forrest Edwards and Jack Williams, 8-7 (4), setting up a quarterfinal meeting with top-seeded North Carolina duo of Brett Clark and Esben Hess-Olsen Saturday, Oct. 12. Redshirt junior Cale Hammond and sophomore Josh Levine improved to 2-2 on the fall with an 8-7 (2) victory over Adrian Riseng and Nathan Debut of Stetson, and will now face Liberty’s Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero for a spot in the semifinals.

In singles, Levine and Hammond led the way for Duke, advancing to the semifinals of their respective draws. Levine topped Sam Williams of UNC Wilmington, 6-2, 6-4, in the first round of the A1 bracket and outlasted Wake Forest’s Aws Laaribi in three sets to earn a semifinal matchup with Martin Kobza of South Carolina State. The sophomore from Syosset, N.Y., moved to 7-1 in fall singles action with the two wins.

Hammond will face Stetson’s Chait Kapukiran in Saturday’s B2 bracket semifinals with a pair of three-set victories Friday. The Tulsa, Okla., native downed Ian Dempster of NC State, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0, in the opening round and battled to a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over UNC Wilmington’s Zach Hublitz in the quarterfinals.

The first two rounds of play in the A2 draw saw McCall cruise to a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Edwards of UNC Charlotte before falling to Pedro Dumont of Wake Forest, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Up next, McCall will take on NC State’s Thomas Weigel in the fifth-place bracket Saturday.

Pura suffered an opening-round setback to Matt Barry of Penn State, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, in the B1 draw but received a bye in in a the consolation quarterfinals. He will return to the courts Saturday in a consolation semifinal match against Liberty’s Dillon Segur.

Saturday’s slate in Winston-Salem will include quarterfinal and semifinals rounds of doubles play and semifinals matches in singles.
