Blue Devils Open Action in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The 10th-ranked Duke women’s tennis team opened action at the Freeman Memorial Championship on Friday at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) in Las Vegas, Nev.  The championship features six of the top 10 teams in the nation, including five teams in the top five.

In doubles action, Duke opened round one with three wins out of four matches.  The 14th-ranked tandem of Annie Mulholland and Ester Goldfeld knocked off UNLV’s Alexis Garrett and Anett Ferenczi-Bako, 6-1, while rookie’s Chalena Scholl and Alyssa Smith posted a 6-4 win over Lucia Batta and Santa Shumilina of UNLV.  Picking up a sold ranked victory for the Blue Devils was the duo of Beatrice Capra and Hanna Mar with a 6-4 win over 16th-ranked Taylor Davidson and Ellen Tsay of Stanford.

The Duke tandem of Marianne Jodoin and Rachel Kahan had to face the top-ranked Robin Anderson and Jennifer Brady of UCLA and lost, 6-1.  

The Blue Devils didn’t fare as well in singles play in the first round notching a 2-5 record.  The 45th-ranked Duke standout Goldfeld notched a 6-0, 6-2 win over Paola Artiga of UNLV and second-seeded and third-ranked Capra cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory against 60th-ranked Giuliana Olmos of USC.  

Other first round action featured 49th-ranked Mar dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision to 41st-ranked Davidson of Stanford.  Mulholland fell, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) to Zoe Scandalis of USC, Scholl lost 7-6, 6-0 to 24th-ranked Brady of UCLA, 17th-ranked Olivia Janowicz of Florida knocked off Smith, 6-3, 6-2 and Jodoin fell, 6-1, 6-2 to 36th-ranked Kyle McPhillips of UCLA.

In round two of singles play, Goldfeld lost 6-1, 6-2 to top-ranked Anderson of UCLA and Capra defaulted to 94th-ranked Ellen Tsay of Stanford with a sore knee.  

The Blue Devils closed strong in singles consolation winning four of five matches.  Mulholland didn’t drop a game to Ferenczi-Bako of UNLV, 6-0, 6-0, Scholl registered a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Iren Kotseva of UNLV and Smith received a default win over 96th-ranked Brynn Boren of USC.  Marr dropped her second straight singles match, 7-6, 6-2, to Catherine Harrison of UCLA.
