DURHAM, N.C. – Trailing 3-2 in the seventh inning, UNC Greensboro got an RBI-single from designated hitter Trevor Edwards and a sacrifice fly from first baseman Lloyd Enzor to top Duke 4-3 on Tuesday night at Jack Coombs Field.

The Spartans got on the board first, scoring on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Christian Wolfe in the top of the second.

Right fielder Grant McCabe led off the bottom of the third with a triple to left field. Shortstop Angelo La Bruna then lifted a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game at 1-1.

UNCG (18-13) threatened to retake the lead in the fifth. With a runner on second and one out on the board, shortstop TJ Spina sent a groundball towards the bag at third. Jordan Betts made a diving stop to his right near the base, hopped to his feet and fired across the diamond to get the out, saving a run in the process. The Spartans loaded the bases later in the inning but couldn’t score as Duke starter Nick Piscotty struck out Edwards swinging to get out of the bases-loaded jam.

The Blue Devils took a 3-1 lead in the fifth. Betts singled to left center and stole second to get the inning started. McCabe then moved Betts over to third on a sacrifice bunt and reached safely when Kris Richards dropped the throw to first. La Bruna then drove in his second run of the game on an RBI-groundout to third. Catcher Ryan Munger followed with a walk on a 3-2 pitch. Two batters later, first baseman Andy Perez lined an RBI-single to left to plate McCabe.

Cole Harrison made it a one-run game at 3-2 with a two-out, pinch-hit RBI-triple in the top of the sixth.

Piscotty pitched well in his fifth career start, holding the Spartans to one run on four hits in five innings of work. Piscotty had three strikeouts and was in line for the win had the Blue Devils held on to their 3-1 lead. Sophomore reliever Dillon Haviland (1-1) took the loss after giving up three runs – two of them earned – on three hits in 1.1 innings. Sophomore Drew Van Orden threw 2.2 scoreless frames out of the bullpen with two strikeouts.

Zach Furl (2-0) earned the win, benefitting from the two-run seventh the Spartans had. Dylan Hathcock tossed two shutout innings and Brennen James picked up his third save of the year after pitching a scoreless ninth.

La Bruna drove in two of Duke’s three runs despite going 0-for-3 at the plate. McCabe finished 1-for-1 with a triple and two runs scored, while Perez added a hit and an RBI. Betts went 1-for-4 with a run, while designated hitter Mike Rosenfeld and left fielder Jeff Kremer had hits for Duke (13-21).

Duke will travel to Maryland for a three-game series in College Park this weekend.
