DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Blue Devils scored two runs in the first three innings, but were unable to come up with the game-tying run late as Davidson hung on to edge the Duke baseball team, 3-2, Tuesday evening at Wilson Field.

Senior Matt Berezo extended his streak to six consecutive games with multiple hits, registering two in tonight’s contest. Redshirt junior Aaron Cohn laced a pair of doubles, his seventh and eighth of the campaign, while senior Mark Lumpa reached base twice and scored both Duke runs.

Davidson (14-7, 5-1 SoCon) used six pitchers to limit Duke (14-12, 4-5 ACC) to six hits. Durin O’Linger (1-0) picked up the win, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings while striking out three.  Freshman Kevin Lewallyn (2-1) took the loss for Duke after giving up one run on three hits over 2.1 innings of work.

Lumpa extended his on base streak to 13 straight games with a leadoff single to start the ballgame. Berezo then laid down a perfect bunt to put the first two men aboard. After a Mike Rosenfeld fielder’s choice, Lumpa crossed home plate on a Chris Marconcini sacrifice fly, his ACC-leading 28th RBI of the 2014 campaign.

Two Davidson runs came home in the bottom of the second as the Wildcats took their first lead of the evening. Forrest Brandt and Sam Foy began the rally with back-to-back base hits before Ben Arkin knocked in a run with a ground ball to the right side. Daniel Gerow then bounced his third double of the season down the left field line to put the Wildcats on top, 2-1.

The early back-and-forth action continued in the third with Duke tying the score at two-all. A leadoff walk to Lumpa turned into the Blue Devils’ second run after the Duke centerfielder scored on a Rosenfeld RBI base hit.

Arkin singled with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Ty Middlebrooks RBI base hit to break the two-all tie. Up 3-2, the Davidson pitching staff allowed just one Blue Devil hit the rest of the way.

Redshirt senior Ryan Deitrich came up just short on a bid for his third home run of the season in the eighth, driving a ball to the edge of the warning track in left field. Duke again threatened in the ninth as Cohn drew a leadoff walk and Lumpa reached via error to extend the inning. Davidson closer Michael Goldberg was able to capture the outside corner on a 3-2 count for the final out of the game, earning his third save of the season.

Next up, Duke hosts North Carolina in a three-game series March 28-30 at Jack Coombs Field.
