GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Nick McCrory secured a trip to the NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championship for the fourth time in his career, winning the three-meter springboard diving event Monday on day one of the 2014 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships.
After leading the field of 33 divers in the preliminary round with a score of 451.10, McCrory earned an award of 408.90 in the event final to conclude the day with a combined score of 860.00. His performance included an inward 3 ½ somersault for a 3.4 degree of difficulty in the second round, which netted 88.40 points from the judges.
With the first-place showing on the three-meter board, McCrory claimed one of five qualifying spots on the men’s side for the NCAA Championship later this month in Austin, Texas. The Chapel Hill, N.C., native has previously garnered All-America honors three times at the 3-meter height at the national meet.
Two other Blue Devils also advanced to the men’s three-meter final Monday afternoon at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, as sophomore Deon Reid placed 14th with a combined score of 649.10 and freshman Cole Plambeck totaled 578.15 points to come in 18th. Reid finaled in the three-meter event for the second consecutive year while Plambeck earned a spot among the final 18 at his first NCAA Zones meet.
On the women’s side, sophomore Jamiee Gundry and freshman Kirby Quinn opened competition on the one-meter springboard. Quinn finished 44th in the preliminary round with a score of 204.40 over her list of six dives while Gundry followed in 45th at 204.00.
The NCAA Zone B Diving Championships resume Tuesday, March 11 at 11 a.m. at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Live results will be available on divemeets.org.
