WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Redshirt junior Cale Hammond captured the first singles title of his career Sunday as the Blue Devils wrapped up the final day of competition at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational, hosted by the Demon Deacons at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
Hammond took the first set of the B2 singles championship match against UNC Wilmington’s Santtu Leskinnen, 6-4. The Tulsa, Okla., native then edged his opponent in a second-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (3) to win the draw. With his 4-0 run in the tournament, Hammond improved to 7-3 overall in fall singles action.
Sunday’s final round of singles also saw sophomore Josh Levine vie for an individual title. Levine advanced to the A1 title match with three straight wins, but fell to Max Kan in two sets, 6-3, 7-5.
In the backdraw of the B1 bracket, freshman TJ Pura won the consolation final, edging UNC Charlotte’s Alex Calott by scores of 6-7 (1), 6-1, (10-7). Meanwhile, sophomore Daniel downed Randy Phillips of UNC Greensboro, 6-3, 6-4, to place seventh in the A2 draw.
Hammond and Levine teamed up in doubles to take on Wake Forest’s duo of Kan and Aws Laaribi. Despite a strong effort, the Blue Devil tandem suffered an 8-5 setback in B doubles bracket third-place match.
Duke’s pair of Pura and McCall also took to the courts Sunday, posting an 8-5 victory over Nolan Bauer and Nicky Kunz of Wake Forest in the A draw fifth-place contest.
