  • McCurdy has continued his ascension through the Astros system and this season has played 27 games at the Double-A level. He is back in Class-A with the Lexington Legends at the moment, but could be in line for another promotion if one of Houston's clubs is in need of a solid backstop.
  • McCurdy, who converted to catcher prior to his senior season at Duke, had a lot to learn about the position when the Astros signed him as a free agent in 2010. However, he has proven to be reliable behind the plate which is one of the main reasons the Astros decided to start him out at Double-A this year. He hit .217 with the Corpus Christi Hooks with four doubles, a triple and a home run while striking out just four times in 69 at bats

Michael Ness l RHP l Newark Bears (Independent)
2010 MLB Draft: 33rd Round (993rd Overall) by the Houston Astros

  • Ness left the Astros organization prior to the 2012 season and joined the Newark Bears in the Can-Am Independent League.
  • Primarily a reliever during his tenure at Duke and with the Astros' minor league clubs, Ness immediately earned a spot in Newark's starting rotation. He has emerged as the ace of the Bears' staff, leading the team in wins (5) and innings pitched (66).
  • Ness has thrown at least five innings in all 10 of his starts and has surrendered three earned runs or fewer in eight of those outings. Two poor outings in which he yielded 11 runs in five innings have inflated his ERA to 4.64. In his other eight starts, he owns a 1.93 ERA.

Dennis O'Grady l RHP l San Diego Padres
2011 MLB Draft: 34th Round (1,043th Overall) by the San Diego Padres
2012 Team: Fort Wayne TinCaps (Class-A Midwest League)
Lake Elsinore Storm (High-A California League)
2012 High-A Stats: 19 APP, 3-1, 3.38 ERA, 26.2 IP, 31 K, 13 BB, .232 B/Avg.

  • O'Grady has split time between the Padres' High-A and Class-A affiliates this season and has excelled at both levels.
  • The former Duke starter opened the year with the High-A Lake Elsinore Storm and posted a 3.38 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 26.2 innings out of the bullpen. Opponents in the California League hit just .232 against him before he moved on to the Class-A Fort Wayne TinCaps where he spent all of his inaugural professional season in 2011.
  • O'Grady has worked out of the bullpen with the TinCaps as well, but the club may be stretching him out to become a starter. The 5-10, 200-pound right-hander has thrown at least two innings in five consecutive appearances and in seven of his 10 outings overall.
  • Known at Duke for his hard fastball and sound command of all four pitches, he has handled lefties and righties equally well this season, holding them to .255 and .250 batting averages, respectively.

Will Piwnica-Worms l OF l Washington Nationals
Undrafted Free Agent: Signed by Washington in 2012
2012 Team: GCL Nationals (Rookie Gulf Coast League)
2012 Rookie Stats: 11 Games, .226 AVG (7-of-31), 1 Double, 3 RBI, 2-2 SB, .429 OBP

  • Piwnica-Worms is a starting outfielder for the GCL Nationals in his first pro season after Washington signed him as an undrafted free agent.
  • The hits have not fallen in his first 11 games as he is hitting just .226 with six singles and a double. Piwnica-Worms is still finding a way to get on base, however, with a .429 on base percentage bolstered by 10 walks.
  • It could be just a matter of time before Piwnica-Worms heats up as he continues to make contact at the plate. He has just seven strikeouts in his 41 plate appearances and continues to play the same all-out defense he did during his four years as Duke's starting center fielder.

David Putman l RHP l Chicago White Sox
Undrafted Free Agent: Signed by Chicago White Sox in 2012
2012 Team: Great Falls Voyagers (Rookie Pioneer League)
2012 Rookie Stats: 4 APP, 1-0, 2.45 ERA, 3.2 IP, 5 K, 2 BB, .214 B/Avg.

  • Putman took a difficult road to the professional ranks, but is off to a successful start in his first season of pro ball.
  • A victim of a shoulder injury that sidelined him for most of his sophomore season and almost half of his junior season, Putman rebounded from the injury to become Duke's closer as a senior. He has carried that success into the Rookie Pioneer League where he is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in four appearances with the Great Falls Voyagers.
  • Putman's plus breaking ball is giving Pioneer League hitters just as much trouble as it did to those in the ACC, as he already has five strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

Marcus Stroman l RHP l Toronto Blue Jays
2012 MLB Draft: 1st Round (22nd Overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays
2012 Team: Vancouver Canadians (Class-A Northwest League)

  • Stroman became Duke's highest draft pick in June when the Blue Jays selected him 22nd overall in the 2012 MLB Draft. He signed a contract with the Blue Jays last week and was assigned to Toronto's Class-A Short-Season affiliate, the Vancouver Canadians.
  • Stroman, an All-America starter who led the nation in strikeouts with 136, was pegged by many scouts and analysts as the most major league-ready pitcher in the draft. He could easily reach Double-A in less than a month and has the talent to join the big-league club by September.
