DURHAM, N.C. - Redshirt sophomore quarterback Brandon Connette scored two touchdowns -- one through the air and one on the ground -- to highlight Duke's 95-snap, controlled scrimmage on Friday night at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Connette, who lines up at various spots within the framework of Duke's offense, hauled in a 15-yard scoring strike from quarterback Sean Renfree before galloping 36 yards for another touchdown.
"I have no idea," Connette playfully said following the scrimmage when asked by the media what his true position is on the team.
Renfree finished the night hitting on 14-of-21 throws for 116 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Backup signal caller Anthony Boone was five-of-10 through the air for 30 yards with one interception while rookie Thomas Sirk completed 12-of-19 passes for 162 yards with two touchdowns. Sirk's scoring tosses went to Nick Hill and Garett Patterson and covered 15 and 49 yards, respectively.
The Blue Devil ground game was paced by freshman Shaquille Powell's eight-carry, 30-yard performance while fellow rookie Jela Duncan logged 28 yards on nine attempts. Senior Desmond Scott caught a scrimmage-best six passes for 39 yards and Patterson, who converted to wide receiver from the defensive backfield this week during practice, had five receptions for 80 yards.
Defensively, cornerbacks Lee Butler and Tony Foster carded interceptions while linebacker Deion Williams recovered one fumble. Freshman defensive end Michael Mann registered one quarterback sack and one caused fumble
Freshman kicker Ross Martin booted field goals of 43 and 48 yards and converted his only PAT attempt.
