Setting the Scene

  • Saturday night is the 2012 opener for both Duke and Notre Dame
  • The Blue Devils posted an 0-1-1 record in a pair of exhibition games, tying Ohio State and falling to Michigan State 1-0 
  • Notre Dame went 2-1-1 in exhibition play with wins at Northern Illinois and over Xavier and a tie against Chivas Guadalajara

Scouting Notre Dame
Notre Dame enters the regular season with a 2-0-1 record in three exhibition games ... The Irish were picked to finish second in the BIG EAST preseason poll and seniors Ryan Finley and Dillon Powers both were named to the preseason All-BIG EAST squad ... Notre Dame finished tied for fourth in the BIG EAST in 2011 with a 9-5-4 overall record.

Blue Devil Army
The Duke men's soccer program is starting a new tradition this season with the addition of the Blue Devil Army ... A men's soccer fan club, members can sign up at www.BlueDevilArmy.com ... Membership is free and those who sign up will get a Blue Devil Army scarf, t-shirt and access to pregame tailgates prior to all home ACC contests ... Attendance at the game is required to receive a scarf and t-shirt.

Duke returns five starters from last year's squad ... Nick Palodichuk is the top returning scorer with 22 points in 2011 ... Duke Welcomes Six Newcomers to Program
The Blue Devils welcome six players to the Duke family in 2012 ... The list includes players from five different states and another from Toronto, Canada. Chad Bush (Toronto, Canada), Wade Clement (Los Angeles, Calif.), Zach Mathers (Keller, Texas), Luis Rendon (Richmond, Va.) and Ryan Thompson (Cary, N.C.) all come to Duke after outstanding scholastic and club soccer careers, while Jack Coleman (Norman, Okla.) becomes a Blue Devil after a one season at Indiana.

Duke will face five opponents ranked among the top 25 in the Soccer America preseason poll, including three among the top 15.

Duke to Appear on RDN Twice in 2012
Duke's contests versus NC State and Maryland will be televised live by Raycom Sports Network, while the Blue Devils' contests versus North Carolina and Boston College will be broadcast by the ACC Digital Network on YouTube. 

John Kerr Enters Fifth Season at Duke
Head coach John Kerr enters his fourth season at Duke ... Kerr holds a 45-29-9 record as the Blue Devils leader and had led Duke into the NCAA Tournament in each of his four seasons ...Under Kerr's direction, the Blue Devils have earned at least one of the three ACC major awards every year ... Kerr is 126-88-22 for his career.

Belshaw and Ibeagha to Lead Duke
Senior goalkeeper James Belshaw and junior center back Sebastien Ibeagha will lead the Blue Devils this season as co-captains ... Belshaw is a second-year captain and Duke's lone senior, while Ibeagha will anchor the backline for the third straight season.

Preseason Honors
Senior James Belshaw has been named to a pair of preseason All-America squads, earning second team recognition from College Soccer News ... He joined Sebastien Ibeagha on the Soccer America preseason All-America squad, one of only two ACC programs to have two players selected.

Luis Rendon Top Freshman List
Luis Rendon highlights Duke's incoming class ... The 2011 Gatorade National Player of the Year, Rendon was tabbed as the No. 29 overall recruit  and No. 9 forward by Top Drawer Soccer ... Rendon finished his scholastic career with 37 goals, 38 assists for 112 points.

The Blue Devils host the John Rennie Nike Invitational next, welcoming Santa Clara and Delaware to Durham on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2, respectively.
