LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After defeating Samford Saturday afternoon, the Duke volleyball team wrapped up the Cardinal Classic with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 26-24) win over Marshall at the KFC Yum! Center.
Sophomore Jeme Obeime and freshman Emily Sklar, who also added 10 digs in the contest, paced the Duke offense with 13 kills each, while sophomore setters Kelsey Williams and Maggie Deichmeister added 20 assists apiece. Junior Ali McCurdy, who led all players with 22 digs for the contest, joined Sklar in all-tournament team honors.
Duke's defense turned in a solid performance, totaling 57 digs and five team blocks to limit Marshall to .200 hitting. Junior Chelsea Cook totaled a team-best four blocks, while also chipping in 10 kills.
"I'm very proud of our team's effort today in back to back matches," said head coach Jolene Nagel. "The team maintained their focus and intensity in order to execute and come out on top. We are growing as a team each time we step on the court and that is exactly what we want to be doing at this point in our season. We have a large freshmen class and we are continually learning more about our team as we blend our upperclassmen and first years together."
The Blue Devils opened up a commanding lead over Marshall in the first set as Obeime and Sklar combined for nine kills. As a team, Duke hit .333 and limited the Herd to .133, winning the first game 25-18.
The Blue Devils' early momentum continued into the second set, resulting in a 25-14 win for Duke. The Blue Devils limited Marshall to just eight kills in the set as McCurdy recorded 11 of Duke's 25 digs.
Despite a 2-0 Duke lead, Marshall refused to give in and took a 17-14 lead to start the third set. The Blue Devils would rally to tie the game at 19-all following a Sklar kill. With the two teams tied at 24-24, Duke took advantage of a service error by the Herd and finished off the game with an ace from Deichmeister.
The Blue Devils return home next weekend for the Duke Classic Friday and Saturday September 7-8. Duke will open the tournament against Elon Friday evening at 7 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
