Cobb, Pathman & the U.S. U-20 National Team

TOKYO, Japan – Blue Devils’ Mollie Pathman and Kelly Cobb led the United States U-20 National Team to the finals of the 2012 U-20 World Cup this morning after defeating Nigeria, 2-0, in the semifinals played in Tokyo, Japan.  The United States is seeking its third World Cup title after winning the tournament in 2002 and 2008.

Pathman, a junior from Durham, N.C., started the game on defense for the U.S., and helped hold a fast, strong Nigerian side goalless for the first time in the tournament. Nigeria had scored 10 goals in the World Cup going into the match in only five matches. In addition to leading a strong defensive unit, Pathman helped the U.S. find the net in the 22nd minute, when she provided a cross from the left sideline that found Morgan Brian unmarked on the right. Brian capitalized on the chance with a driven header past Nigerian goalkeeper Ibubeleye Whyte to put the U.S. up 1-0.

Cobb, a native of Chugiak, Alaska, started the game for the United States and nearly scored an outstanding goal late in the first half when she received a cross from Kealia Ohai and fired a header that went just over the crossbar and hit the top netting. Cobb was substituted in the 46th minute for Chioma Ubogagu.

The United States will face Germany in the finals on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 6:20 am ET in Tokyo, Japan. The United States will seek a better result than its Aug. 27 game against Germany in which the strong German side controlled the game and won by a decisive margin of 3-0. The World Cup Finals will be shown live on ESPNU and ESPN3.
