DURHAM, N.C. – Coming off two victories over the weekend in the Duke Nike Classic, the Blue Devil women’s soccer team moved up two spots to No. 2 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire and Soccer America national rankings.  With Duke moving to No. 2, Thursday’s ACC contest at top-ranked Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., will feature the top two ranked teams in the nation.

In the NSCAA/Continental Tire listing, Florida State, Duke, UCLA, Stanford, Boston College, Central Florida, Oklahoma State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Texas A&M round out the top 10.  Following Florida State and Duke in the Soccer America ledger is Stanford, UCLA, Virginia, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, BYU, Oklahoma State and Penn State.

The Blue Devils currently own a 6-1 record and feature a NCAA-best 4.14 goals per game average heading into ACC play.  Duke has scored 29 goals in seven matches, which is two more than any other team in the nation.

With the Blue Devils missing their top two scorers from a year ago – Mollie Pathman and Kelly Cobb – Duke has used a team effort to score two or more goals in all seven matches.  A total of eight student-athletes have registered goals led by Laura Weinberg (7), Kim DeCesare (6) and Gilda Doria (5).  Both DeCesare and Doria had combined for eight total goals over the last two years, but they have notched 11 in seven matches in 2012.

Cobb and Pathman returned to Durham on Monday, after leading the U.S. U-20 squad to the World Cup title with a 1-0 victory over Germany on Saturday.  The duo combined for 17 goals and 20 assists a year ago for the Blue Devils.

Duke will open league action this weekend with two contests in the state of Florida.  Thursday’s contest at Florida State will kick at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Sunday, Sept. 16 match at 1:00 p.m., at Miami.  Both contests will be aired live on ESPN3.
