DURHAM, N.C. - Duke redshirt senior quarterback Sean Renfree has been named to the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team announced on Tuesday by the Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).

Renfree is the fourth Blue Devil to earn the honor, joining Zaid Abdul-Aleem (1994), Re'quan Boyette (2008) and Bryan Morgan (2010). Joining Renfree on the 2012 Football Bowl Subdivision squad are Rex Burkhead (Nebraska), Mike Golic, Jr. (Notre Dame), Mike James (Miami (Fla.)), Barrett Jones (Alabama), Collin Klein (Kansas State), Philip Lutzenkirchen (Auburn), Brandon McManus (Temple), Aaron Murray (Georgia), Kyle Negrete (USC) and Patrick Omameh (Michigan).

"I feel very honored to be considered for this award alongside some of the best leaders in the country and am very fortunate to be able to support the Duke community in a number of ways," Renfree said.

A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., Renfree has participated in community service projects involving the Duke Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Read with the Blue Devils, Durham Rescue Mission, the MLK "Million Meals" Event and Active Teens.

"Sean Renfree was named to the AFCA Good Works Team along with 11 other college players, absolutely rightfully so," Duke head coach David Cutcliffe said. "Sean, as most people know, goes about his business very quietly. He spends a lot of his time in service for a lot of people. He is certainly very active at the children's hospital, and nobody would know that if not for me. He doesn't advertise all the things that he does on this campus, off this campus and in his own community. If there ever was an AFCA Good Works Team Member, it's Sean Renfree. A hardy congratulations to Sean, his family and his teammates from myself and the rest of the staff and Duke football."

Renfree is a three-year starter for the Blue Devils who this season has completed 73-of-104 passes for 764 yards and five touchdowns in three games. He leads the ACC in pass completions and ranks third in both completion percentage (.702) and passing yards per game (254.7).

This summer, the AFCA Good Works Team program received 117 nominations from colleges and universities hailing from 35 states. From the nominations, a prestigious voting panel comprised of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members and college football media selected two 11-member teams - one featuring players competing in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and the other a combined team representing the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA.

"As fans of college football, Allstate takes great pride in partnering with the AFCA to recognize these dedicated student-athletes for their accomplishments off the field," said Kathy Mabe, president of Allstate's West regions and a member of the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team voting panel.  "These players have demonstrated the unique ability to balance academics with athletics while donating their limited free time and energy to serve others, and we at Allstate commend them for their commitment to volunteerism."

Each year, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team raises the bar for the impact that student-athletes can have on their local communities, and this year's roster is no exception. From creating mentorship programs for at-risk youth to building homes and health clinics overseas, these 22 young men have dedicated themselves to bettering the lives of others through countless acts of service.

"The AFCA, its Board of Trustees and members are honored to partner with Allstate in announcing another great class of student-athletes for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team," said Grant Teaff, AFCA Executive Director. "These 22 student-athletes stand out from hundreds of other college football players who volunteer their time each week to make an impact on their teams, and in their community."

The Team Captain and his fellow award recipients will be invited to New Orleans to take part in a special youth football clinic leading up to the 2013 Allstate Sugar Bowl.
