PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.
– The
Duke women’s tennis team opened play in the qualifying rounds at the
Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades,
Calif., with a strong showing in doubles action as two Blue Devil duos
advanced to the second round of qualifying after
defeating ranked opponents.
The Riviera/ITA All-American Championship kicked off on Sept. 29 with prequalifying rounds. In the first round
of prequalifying, sophomore Annie Mulholland, who was tabbed No. 108 in the ITA rankings, fell to Caryssa Peretz from Virginia in a three set match, 2-6, 6-2, 1-6.
On
Tuesday, four Blue Devils started their quest through qualifying to
seek a spot in the main draw as sophomore
Ester Goldfeld, juniors Hanna Mar and Marianne Jodoin, and senior Mary
Clayton took the courts in the first round of singles play.
In the first round of singles qualifying play, 68th-ranked
Goldfeld
downed No. 36 Alexa Guarachi, 6-1, 7-6(5), before falling to Krista
Hardebeck of Stanford in the second round. Goldfeld currently owns a
record of 5-2 on the year in singles play, including two wins over
opponents ranked in the ITA preseason poll.
In other singles action, 44th-ranked
Clayton
fell to No. 59 Marie Casares of Vanderbilt 6-1, 7-5, while No. 53
Lauren Harding of Georgia outlasted No. 27 Jodoin 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Mar,
ranked 34th
in the ITA poll, lost 6-2, 6-2 to Ema Burgic of Baylor.
In the first qualifying round of doubles, the 27th
ranked duo of Clayton and Jodoin downed No. 37 Hideko Tachibana and Kristin Norton of Harvard, 8-4, while the 43rd ranked tandem of Goldfeld
and Mulholland edged No. 22 Cristina Sanchez and Cristina Stancu of Texas A&M, 8-6.
The
second round of doubles qualifying is set to continue on Wednesday with
Clayton and Jodoin slated to face
No. 41 Li Xi and Stephanie Nauta of Virginia, and Goldfeld and
Mulholland set to play Caroline Magnusson and Caroline Thorton of
Tulane.
