DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke redshirt senior quarterback Sean Renfree was selected as one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, an honor that focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in September. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through December 3. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner.
In addition to his on-field and academic accolades, Renfree is heavily involved in the Durham community. A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., Renfree is an active volunteer at numerous community service projects, including the Duke Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Read with the Blue Devils, Durham Rescue Mission, the MLK "Million Meals" Event and Active Teens.
On the field, Renfree is a two-year team captain for the Blue Devils and has played a key role in Duke's 5-2 start in 2012. The most accurate passer in school history, Renfree is among the top quarterbacks in the ACC and is on pace to finish among the top quarterbacks in Duke's 100-year football history. With career totals of 7,869 passing yards, 42 touchdowns and a .646 (742-of-1,149) completion percentage, Renfree ranks among the top five in school history in pass completions, passing touchdowns, completion percentage, passing efficiency and passing yards.
In the classroom, Renfree is pursuing a graduate degree in humanities after earning his undergraduate degree in Public Policy in January. He boasts a 3.814 grade point average in his graduate program, is a two-time member of the All-ACC Academic Football Team and a four-time selection to the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
Also joining Renfree as finalists for the Senior CLASS Award are Ryan Aplin (Arkansas State), Johnthan Banks (Mississippi State), Matt Barkley (USC), Duron Harmon (Rutgers), Barrett Jones (Alabama), Landry Jones (Oklahoma), Collin Klein (Kansas State), Adam Replogle (Indiana) and Manti Te'o (Notre Dame).
