DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's cross country team is ranked tenth nationally after a second place finish at the ACC Championships last weekend.  Recently, sat down with senior harrier Sophia Ziemian to learn more about the Lewisburg, Pa., native.  What has been your proudest moment at Duke?
Sophia Ziemian
: I think my freshman year when our team finished eighth at nationals.  It was really exciting for our team and for myself personally because coming out of high school I never really expected to be racing at nationals my freshman year. It was very exciting. What do you think the most misunderstood thing about cross country is?
SZ: I think people don't really understand what we do, they are like 'so you just run all the time?' I don't think people really understand how we train, how each day is really different like different types of workouts. I think a lot of people looking in just think we go for the same run every day. What is your favorite spot on campus?
SZ: I really like running in the Duke forest and I really enjoy studying in the K center. Any words of wisdom to pass on to freshman or future Blue Devils?
Enjoy all of the opportunities that you have, and make sure you have fun. Enjoy your sport. How did you get started in cross country?
I started in ninth grade to get in shape for basketball. I was really into basketball then, and I ended up being a lot better at running than I was at basketball. As a kid, did you know what you wanted to be when you grew up?
I think as a kid I wanted to be a basketball player, but now I am in biomedical engineering so I am interested in getting a masters or further graduate school, but probably doing some sort of research or teaching in that area. If you could pick anyone, who would you choose to be your mentor?
I think my parents have been great mentors to me up to this point, so I don't know if I would pick anyone else. If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
Give the money to my family, or find a charity that I could give some of the money to. I don't really feel like I need a lot of money personally. What is your favorite late night snack?
Probably some type of fruit, maybe strawberries. Do you have any hidden talents?
I played in the marching band in high school. I played the trumpet, but I also played the piano and I guess a lot of people probably don't know that. What is one possession you cannot live without?
Probably my running shoes What has been your favorite class at Duke?
Last spring I took a biomechanics class which I really liked, and I also took an anatomy of the lower extremities class, which is a cadaver lab for the lower extremities which was really fun, so probably those two. What is one chore you absolutely hate doing?
Probably vacuuming.
