GOLDSBORO, N.C. -- Seniors Tim Gornik and Adam Sumrall posted matching 70s (-2) Monday to move into a tie for first in The Trojan at Walnut Creek Country Club. The Duke tandem is one shot clear of Dixon Walker (Newberry) after 18 holes of play.
Gornik opened with a par before suffering a bogey on No. 2. He recovered with a birdie on No. 5 and went on to post an even-par 36 on the opening nine holes. Gornik birdied No. 10 and No. 11 to move to two-under on the day after closed with a birdie on No. 18 to combat a bogey on the previous hole.
Sumrall, a South Bend, Ind., native, was steady throughout the opening round en route to a 34-36=70. His round was highlighted by an eagle putt from just off the green on the par 5 11th hole.
Sophomore Turner Southey-Gordon is tied for 12th after posting a 73 (+1), while Michael Ricaurte is tied for 28th with a four-over 76. Southey-Gordon got off to a strong start with a three-under 33 on the opening nine holes of play.
UNC Pembroke holds the team lead after shooting a 294. Newberry is one shot back followed by Barton (296), Mount Olive (296) and Coker (300). Duke players are competing in the event as individuals.
