DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt senior defensive back Ross Cockrell was named to the 2013 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Defensive Back Trophy Watch List, the website announced Monday.

A 6-0, 180-pound cornerback, Cockrell was named All-America honorable mention by Sports Illustrated as a junior after leading the ACC with 0.38 interceptions per game and ranking third with 1.38 passes defended per game. In total, he picked off five passes and broke up 13 others in leading Duke to a 6-6 regular season record and a berth in the Belk Bowl.

Cockrell, a native of Waxhaw, N.C., also amassed 71 tackles in 2012 while also serving as team captain. He drew Preseason All-ACC first team honors from Phil Steele’s College Football Preview and enters 2013 as one of the ACC’s top cornerbacks with 187 tackles, nine interceptions and 29 pass breakups. He also scored two touchdowns in 2013, including a 76-yard blocked field goal return and a 32-yard interception return.

The CFPA Defensive Back Trophy is one of 20 position-specific awards presented by CFPA that encompass the offensive, defensive and special teams aspects of football. All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration. More than 130 CFPA recipients have signed professional contracts, and twenty-one have been first-round NFL Draft selections.
