DURHAM, N.C. – Graduate student Juliet Bottorff was named the Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week after the Newark, Del., native earned a first-place finish at the highly-competitive Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon in South Bend, Ind.
Bottorff averaged 5:22 per mile pace to finish in a time of 16:43.8, nine seconds ahead of second-place finisher and All-American, Florida State’s Colleen Quigley. Bottorff was just one of two competitors to finish under 17-minutes for the 5,000-meter distance and led a young Blue Devil squad to a 10th-place team finish.
A 2012 cross country All-American, Bottorff has finished first in each of the two meets she has entered this season. On Sept. 20, Bottorff set a course record at the Adidas XC Challenge, covering the 5,000-meter course in Cary, N.C., in a time of 16:28.9. The Blue Devils placed first at the invitational, defeating ACC opponents NC State and North Carolina.
Bottorff will travel with Duke to the Wisconsin Invitational Saturday, Oct. 19.
