It’s officially Senior Week for Duke Field Hockey!

I feel like I just wrote a blog about the first game week, and here we are at Senior Week! Loading the bus to head to the airport Friday morning, it was so hard to believe that “the Boston trip,” which seemed in our preseason discussions to be an eternity away, had finally arrived.

After landing in a chilly Boston Friday morning, we were all excited.  Freshman goalie Kelsey Wagner was giddiest of all as we were now on her home turf. She quickly became the teams “go-to” member for questions about the area. That afternoon DUFH took some time to explore Fenway Park before practice. It was inspiring to know that a World Series game concluded there just hours before.

On Saturday Duke came out on top after a hard-fought battle, winning in the first minute of OT against Boston College. On Sunday we grabbed another victory over Boston University, 3-1. The BC victory will be one we talk about for years as senior Grace Christus tied the score literally in the final seconds of regulation.

Last week in a team meeting with Greg Dale, our team psychologist, our seniors were asked to describe what Duke field hockey meant to them.  They shared with us that the Duke field hockey culture is unlike anything else we will ever experience. The culture and reputation of the program is something that our senior leaders have built from the ground up. They have helped inspire us to take pride in what we stand for and to constantly work to uphold these high standards, not only for ourselves, but also for each other—the 21 sisters that share a path that no one else will ever completely understand.

Another realization that the seniors shared, which especially resonates now, is the simple truth that time at Duke passes quickly.  Senior Emmie Le Marchand epitomizes the words “NO REGRETS!” which she writes on her arm before every game, consistently making the most of her minutes on and off the field with her remaining time here.

As a freshman, I can’t believe that I only have a little over three years left of field hockey, so I can only imagine how our seniors feel about this final home game. With the ACC and NCAA tournaments quickly approaching, the team is dedicated to ensure that the 2013 season will be one for the books.

We look forward this week to the challenge of our last ACC regular season game, and the opportunity to honor the eight unbelievable “sister” seniors who have left a legacy and illuminated a path for all of our future senior classes to follow.

Thank you, seniors!
