DURHAM, N.C. – After leading the Duke volleyball team to the 2013 ACC Championship, libero Ali McCurdy and middle blocker Jordan Tucker garnered league weekly honors as the duo picked up ACC Player of the Week and ACC Freshman of the Week accolades, respectively.
McCurdy was sensational in Duke’s final two matches, amassing 65 digs to lead the Blue Devils to the 11th ACC Championship in program history. The senior co-captain averaged 7.22 digs per set, totaling six or more digs in 6-of-9 frames and 10-plus digs in three stanzas. McCurdy matched a career-high with 37 digs versus NC State, a mark that is tied for second in Duke’s single match records. She followed with a 28-dig performance in the season finale, willing the Blue Devils to a five-set victory over No. 14 North Carolina. In addition to anchoring a defense that limited its two opponents to a combined .144 hitting percentage, McCurdy added four service aces and was also perfect on serve receive.
Tucker also turned in two of her best performances in the Blue Devils’ ACC Championship-clinching victories. Against NC State, she led the team and matched a career high with seven blocks, helping Duke limit the Wolfpack to a .123 hitting percentage. The Blue Devils’ most consistent target in their come-from-behind victory over UNC, Tucker smashed a career-best 16 kills on .353 hitting while also contributing six blocks. Over the two matches, she totaled 13 blocks, averaging 1.44 per set, and added 20 kills on 45 attack attempts.
McCurdy’s honor is the fourth ACC Player of the Week citation earned by a Blue Devil this season, while Tucker is the second Duke rookie to grab freshman of the week accolades. Sophomore Emily Sklar picked up player of the week honors twice this season, classmate Elizabeth Campbell also earned the distinction and Sasha Karelov was awarded freshman of the week honors.
Duke is set to host the first and second rounds of the 2013 NCAA Tournament in Cameron Indoor Stadium this weekend. The Blue Devils take on the College of Charleston in opening round action Friday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
