VAN ORDEN DRAFTED BY NATIONALS

The Washington Nationals took senior right-hander Drew Van Orden in the fifth round of the 2014 Major League Draft at No. 154. Van Orden is the 24th Duke pitcher to be drafted in program history and the first since Marcus Stroman was taked with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2012 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays.

A native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Van Orden was sensational in his final season at Duke. He appeared in 15 games with 14 starts on the mound and registered career bests in ERA (3.19), innings pitched (87.1) and strikeouts (91). After moving into the Friday starter role at the beginning of the ACC season, he finished the year ranked 13th in the conference in opposing batting average (.219), 14th in innings pitched, sixth in strikeouts and seventh in strikeouts per game.

STROMAN PICKS UP SECOND STRAIGHT WIN

Toronto won their sixth straight game and former Blue Devil ace Marcus Stroman picked up his second straight win as the Blue Jays downed the Cardinals, 3-1.
Stroman (3-0) allowed one run on seven hits over six innings, striking out a career-best seven while walking one batter.

"Out of the gate, he struggled a little bit but then he started using all his pitches," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "When he started using his breaking ball and his changeup a little bit, it made all the difference in the world."

Toronto is in in a strong position to head to the postseason for the first time since winning the World Series in 1993. Stroman, the Jays hope, is the Little Engine That Could get them there, writes ESPN.com's Jason Wojciechowski.

RED SOX SELECT BETTS

The Boston Red Sox took senior third baseman Jordan Betts in the 18th round (No. 554) of the 2014 MLB Draft.
Betts became the first Blue Devil third baseman chosen since Jeff Becker was selected in the 20th round of the 1998 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Wilmington, N.C., native enjoyed a standout senior campaign, which culminated with his second consecutive All-ACC second team honors. The first Blue Devil to earn back-to-back all-league distinction since Vaughn Schill in 1998 and 1999, Betts finished the season ranked 15th in the ACC in batting average (.316), second in doubles (20) and sixth in slugging percentage (.515). For his career, Betts played in 217 games and registered a .272 batting average with 69 doubles, six triples and 17 home runs.

ATHLETICS DRAFT HUBER

The Oakland A's selected senior right-hander Robert Huber in the 26th round (No. 792) of the 2014 MLB Draft. Huber moved into the closer role this season and flourished in 28 games in relief. The Plano, Texas, native ranked fourth in the ACC in saves (10), 13th in appearances (28) and fifth in games finished (22).

One of just three Blue Devils to record 10 or more saves in a single season, Huber is also one of just four Duke pitchers to total 10 or more saves as well as 15 or more wins in a career.

He finished his collegiate career ranked ninth in school history in wins (16), fifth in career saves (11), ninth in innings pitched (240.2) and 18th in strikeouts (172).
