DURHAM, N.C. – Duke field hockey head coach Pam Bustin and the Blue Devil staff welcomed the addition of seven incoming players to the program for the 2014 campaign. Defender Alexa Mackintire comes to Duke from Southborough, Mass.

Prior to Duke: Mackintire brings junior national team experience to the Duke program as she is currently a member of the U.S. U21 junior squad and previously played on the U19 and U17 junior national teams. A two-time NFHCA first team All-American and four-time all-league selection, she totaled 18 goals and 18 assists during her senior campaign at St. Mark’s School in addition to earning ISL League MVP honors. Mackintire guided her team to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council title in 2012, garnering tournament MVP accolades.  

Bustin’s Take: "I cannot believe that it is finally time to introduce Alexa! I am so happy that she has chosen Duke and I look forward to bringing her hockey game to Durham. Alexa has represented the US junior teams and has competed with the best in her age group. Her skills are sharp and her athleticism exceptional. Alexa's talent will continue to develop and shape the backfield integrity of Duke field hockey."

What is your favorite field hockey memory?
AM: Winning the New England championship in 2012 after double overtime.

When did you start playing field hockey?
AM: I started playing field hockey in third grade. I went to a local camp during the summer because my sister went to that camp every summer and convinced me it was super fun. I resisted at first because I thought ice hockey was my favorite sport. After camp I fell in love with the game.

Why did you choose Duke?
AM: The great combination of academics and athletics.

What are your goals for your collegiate career?
AM: Win an NCAA Championship!!

Who has had the biggest impact on your life?
AM: My family because I would not be where I am or who I am without them.

Pre-game ritual/superstition: I always wear a headband and put my left shin guard on first.
If you were to play another sport, what would it be? Tennis
Best advice you’ve received: “Play every game like it’s your last.”
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Living in a city.
