Setting the Scene

  • Duke is 2-1 overall following a pair of wins over the weekend. The Blue Devils dropped to 14 in the coaches poll and 16th in the Inside Lacrosse rankings.
  • Saturday’s game will be the first road game for the young Blue Devils squad and only the second game of the year for the Pioneers.
  • Denver climbed to the top of the polls this past week following its commanding 14-6 victory over a ranked Air Force squad that previously beat Duke.

The Series History

  • Duke and Denver are facing off for the 11th time  and for the seventh straight season.
  • The Blue Devils and Pioneers are all even at 5-5 in the overall series, but Denver has won the past two meetings. Denver is 5-3 against Duke since 2007.

Last Time Out

  • Attackmen Jack Bruckner and Justin Guterding combined for nine goals and seven assists to lead No. 7 Duke to a 22-7 win over visiting Cleveland State Sunday. Bruckner posted five goals and one assist while Guterding added four markers and six helpers.
  • Duke, leading 12-6 at the half, came out of the locker room and opened the game wide open with seven third-quarter scores. The Blue Devils tacked on three more goals in the fourth quarter for the 22-7 final score.
  • Danny Fowler (3 saves & 5 goals allowed in 22:43) and Turner Uppgren (six saves & one goal allowed in 27:10) shared time between the Duke pipes. David McCann came on in the final 10:07 and made one save.

Last Time We Met

  • Second-ranked Denver scored the game’s final two goals to outlast No. 3 Duke 14-12 in a thrilling back-and-forth game last season. Myles Jones led all scorers with five points.
  • Deemer Class registered four goals to go with Jones’ three goals and two assists, while Case Matheis had a goal and three assists. Duke never led in the game as it fought back to tie it four times over the course of the four quarters.
  • Connor Cannizzaro led all Denver goal scorers with three tallies, while Jack Bobzien and Tyler Pace had a goal and three assists.
  • Trevor Baptiste was 18-of-30 at the faceoff X for the afternoon, including 13-of-19 in the second half. Kyle Rowe finished the day 10-of-25, while senior Rowland Pettit came in to spark the Blue Devils’ fourth-quarter run with a pair of victories at the X.
  • Alex Ready made nine stops for Denver and Danny Fowler had seven for the Blue Devils.

Scouting Denver

  • Denver moved into the nation’s No. 1 spot following its 14-6 victory over Air Force in the season opener last weekend.
  • Senior attackman Connor Cannizzaro headlines the Pioneer offense and is coming off of a six-point outing against the Falcons. He is riding a 42-game point streak and owns 26 career hat tricks. Austin French and Ethan Walker joined Cannizzaro on the attack, chipping in four goals. Jeremy Bosher added three more for the Pioneers.
  • Trevor Baptiste picked up right where he left off in 2016, winning 15-of-18 faceoffs and picking up 12 ground balls.
  • Alex Ready made 10 saves and allowed five goals in 57 minutes of action to earn BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Versus No. 1 since 2007

  • The Blue Devils will face off against the nation’s No. 1 team for the 15th time since 2007 ... The Blue Devils are 6-8 against No. 1 teams since 2007 with the most recent win being a 13-8 win over Notre Dame in the 2015 ACC Tournament.

Second Half Success

  • Duke held both High Point and Cleveland State to a single second-half goal over the weekend. The Blue Devils allowed the Panthers eight shots in the second half and the Vikings 12, outscoring them 15-2 overall in the two games.
  • The Blue Devils have outscored its foes 19-8 in the second half this season and are outshooting them 58-36.

  • Justin Guterding, with a hat trick in all three games this season, has at least one goal in his 12 previous games. His streak is the fifth longest among Division I players.

100 and Counting

  • Senior attackman Jack Bruckner notched his 100th and 101st career goals against Air Force, becoming the 17th Blue Devil in program history to reach the mark. He has 106 for his career to rank 15th at Duke.
  • Justin Guterding followed suit with his 100th and 101st goals in the win over High Point. He is 17th in Duke history with 105.

Success at the X

  • Duke senior faceoff specialist Kyle Rowe is off to a strong start in 2017, winning 75 percent of his faceoffs in the two games he has played.
  • He has picked up double digit ground balls in both games and has won the ground ball in 76 percent of his faceoff victories.

Battle Looms at the X

  • Saturday’s game will feature two of the best faceoff specialists in the country in Duke’s Kyle Rowe and Denver Trevor Baptiste.
  • Both are poised to leave their names in the NCAA records book in faceoff wins, win percentage and ground balls.
  • This will be the second full-time matchup between Rowe and Baptiste - Rowe took just five faceoffs in the 2015 meeting.

Blue Devils Duo Riding Point Streaks

  • Justin Guterding has scored a point in all 40 of his games as a Blue Devil, totaling 105 goals and 54 assists for 149 points.
  • Jack Bruckner is riding a 41-game point streak, dating back to May 26, 2014. He has 131 points from 99 goals and 32 assists in that span.

Uppgren Grabs First Win

  • Redshirt freshman goaltender Turner Uppgren picked up his first career victory between the pipes against Cleveland State last weekend. Uppgren came off the bench in the second quarter against the Vikings and made six saves and allowed just one goal in 27:10 of action.
  • He saw his first minutes in goal Friday night, playing the second half against High Point. He made one save and allowed one goal against the Panthers.  In 57:10 in the cage, Uppgren sports a 2.10 goals against average and a .778 save percentage.

  • Duke returns home to close out its February schedule next Saturday, Feb. 25 against Saint Joseph’s.
