DURHAM, N.C. – Former Blue Devil All-American Ashley Twichell is set to compete at the 17th FINA World Championships beginning this weekend in Budapest, Hungary.
A 2011 graduate of Duke, Twichell will make her third FINA World Championships appearance after previously representing the United States in 2011 and 2015. Twichell qualified to compete in the open water five-kilometer and 10-kilometer events after capturing a national title in the 10K event in May at the USA Swimming Open Water National Championships. The Fayetteville, N.Y., native was also fourth at the 5K distance at the national championships to solidify her trip to Budapest.
At the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia, Twichell was sixth in the open water 5K and ninth in the 25K while helping the U.S. earn the open water team title. In 2011, she took bronze in the 5K and helped Team USA win gold in the 5K team pursuit in Shanghai, China.
The FINA World Championships get underway Friday and continue through Friday, July 21. The women’s 10K open water event is slated for Sunday, July 16 while the 5K race will be held Wednesday, July 19.
