Duke Claims Third Straight Carolina Cup

CLEMSON, S.C. – For the third-consecutive year, the No. 18 Duke rowing team claimed the Carolina Cup with a score of 90 points at Lake Hartwell on the campus of Clemson. The Blue Devils earned first in all five races, including the V8, 2V8, V4, 2V4 and 3V8/4V8.

“It was a great day for Duke and a nice way to officially start off the spring,” said head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno. “Our team faced adversity with our practice schedule yet remained composed and executed terrific racing. I am proud of our efforts today but eager to get back to work to find a few more gears for the remainder of the season.

“Thanks to host Clemson and great racing across all three teams,” said Cooke Carcagno.

Duke tallied 90 total points, followed by North Carolina (76) and Clemson (74).

In the first race of morning, the Blue Devil V8 boat earned first place with a time of 6:49.0, nearly seven seconds faster than Clemson (6.58.8), who earned second. In the 2V8, Duke edged out the Tar Heels with a time of 6:59.9, giving the Blue Devils their second win of the morning.

In the third race, the V4 boat won by over 14 seconds, finishing with a time of 7:49.0. In the second-to-last race, Duke continued its morning success with a nearly 20 second victory over UNC in the 2V4.

In the final race of the morning, Duke outraced North Carolina in the 3V8 by 21 seconds, clocking a time of 7:12.4. In addition, the 3V8 B boat for Duke outraced the Tar Heels' 4V8 boat by 36 seconds, earning a time of 7:18.0.

The Blue Devils next compete at the Cooper Sprints in Camden, N.J., on Sunday, March 24.
