DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University senior Laura Weinberg was named one of 30 candidates for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award, which is given to women’s soccer student-athletes who excel both on and off the field.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

A native of Boca Raton, Fla., Weinberg is coming off a breakout junior campaign collecting 16 goals, 12 assists and a school-record 44 points last season.  Her 16 goals were tied for a team high and was a career high, while ranking tied for second on Duke’s single-season chart.  Weinberg, a Soccer America MVP in 2012, also notched five game-winning goals and registered eight of her 16 goals against ACC opponents.  Over her career, Weinberg has scored 34 goals and posted 86 points to rank tied for fourth and fifth, respectively, on Duke’s career lists.

The 30 candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one female candidate who best exemplify excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Women’s College Cup® in December.

Duke will open the regular season on the road at 12th-ranked Texas A&M on Friday, Aug. 23 at 8:30 p.m.  The Blue Devils will close the weekend at South Carolina on Sunday, Aug. 25.
