Associate director of sports performance William Stephens is in his 19th season with Duke Athletics. He is the sports performance coordinator for the Duke men's basketball program and has held the Strength and Conditioning Specialist Certification since 1996.

Stephens is a native of Whiteville, N.C. A 1983 graduate of West Columbus High School in Cerro Gordo, N.C., he was a first-team All-Three Rivers Conference offensive lineman in 1982. He graduated from N.C. Central University in 1987 with a degree in criminal justice.

Stephens worked 13 years in law enforcement before moving into athletics. He was an accomplished weightlifter who won three consecutive State Drug-Free Powerlifting championships from 1991-93. He also set the state record in the deadlift (661 pounds) in 1993 and won a gold medal at the 1994 World Championships for Law Enforcement.

Stephens, his wife Nancy and son William (P.J.) reside in Wake Forest, N.C. P.J. Stephens currently plays collegiate basketball at Guilford.
