The Albuquerque, N.M., native took the heptathlon crown at the NCAA indoor championships this past weekend in Nampa, Idaho with a school and conference record score of 6,183 points. This mark also places him third on the all-time collegiate performance list in the event.
During the competition, the junior set six personal records and shattered his own 1,000 meters world record by four seconds with a time of 2:23.63. This time also placed him in the collegiate top ten for this season's open 1,000 meters.
Earlier this season, Beach took first place in the heptathlon at the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference(ACC) Indoor Championships by earning a total of 5,862 points. His performance placed him over 500 points beyond the second place finisher.
The Blue Devil has also been placed on the Bowerman watch list. The Bowerman is awarded to the top male and female track athletes for each year. It is named after the legendary Bill Bowerman who served as the track and field coach at the University of Oregon for twenty-three years.
