DURHAM, N.C. -- After a four-year career that included three NCAA Championships, Duke fencer Becca Ward received another honor from the National Collegiate Athletic Association when she earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

A Public Policy major pursuing a certificate in Energy and the Environment, Ward leaves Duke as one of the most decorated student-athletes in school history and the winner of the 2009, 2011 and 2012 NCAA Women's Saber Championships. She amassed a career record of 272-7, was a four-time All-America selection and also a Capital One Academic All-District III selection as a junior.

Also the winner of two bronze medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Ward is one of 58 student-athletes to receive the scholarship during the winter 2012 period. The NCAA wards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.

Ward is the second Duke student-athlete to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship this academic year, joining volleyball senior Sophia Dunworth who earned the award during the fall 2011 period. Both Ward and Dunworth also received ACC Postgraduate Scholarships as well.

The one-time grants of $7,500 each are awarded for fall sports, winter sports and spring sports. Each sports season (fall, winter and spring), there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.
