GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke?
Nicole Lipp: Our semifinal game with Wake Forest last year. We had gone back and forth with Wake a couple of times that season, beating them once and losing to them in the ACC Tournament. Going into that game, we were all mentally sharp and we dominated the game. So that was a really good feeling and it gave us a lot of momentum going into the championship game.
GoDuke.com: What do you think is the most misunderstood thing about soccer?
NL: I think people don't really understand the physical nature of soccer, especially female soccer. People just kind of think that we run around, kick the ball and try to score goals, but it is very physical and injuries do happen.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite part about being a Duke student-athlete?
NL: I absolutely love the school spirit. All of the student-athletes support each other a tremendous amount. I love being on the field at Koskinen Stadium, looking at the crowd and seeing some of my really good friends out there supporting us.
GoDuke.com: What has been your favorite class at Duke?
NL: Right now I am really enjoying my insurgence self-class, a history class focused on the Civil War. That is one of my favorite time periods in American history. I also really like this intermediate finance class that I am currently taking. I want to go into finance, so it's really cool to be able to learn about what I want to do after I get out of college.
GoDuke.com: Tell us about a time when you first started playing soccer.
NL: I got started because my parents exposed me to a ton of different sports, my dad played soccer in college at Dartmouth. I played in rec league kind of stuff, played on my brother's team when I was really young, like three or four years old. I really loved it and it just stuck with me. I continued by joining club, travel teams. I really formed a great passion for it. I think one of the reasons was because one of my first club coaches he instilled a love for the game and emphasized having fun.
GoDuke.com: What was your favorite food when you were a child?
NL: Definitely pasta. I ate so much pasta with just butter and parmesan cheese. My family will never let me live this down, but we took a trip to Italy and I literally ordered pasta, butter and sauce on the side for every meal. They were like 'Nicole, we are in one of the food capitals of the world, how are you just ordering pasta?'
GoDuke.com: What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
NL: Probably cleaning my apartment. I am a little bit of a neat freak, I like to keep it clean but at the same time I wish I could just twitch my nose and have it done.
GoDuke.com: What's your favorite midnight snack?
NL: Popcorn, for sure. I have it every couple of weeks for sure.
GoDuke.com: Do you have any hidden talents?
NL: Well, I played the piano growing up. I also played the flute. I love music, so I was in the choir in middle school, but didn't really pursue music in high school because of athletics.
GoDuke.com: Mountains or Beach?
NL: I love to swim. I love to be in the water. I like the weather better, I like to lay out. It is more enjoyable for me. Being from Chicago, people from the west coast or the east coast on our team don't really believe we have beaches. I tell them, we have Lake Michigan and even though it's fresh water, we still have a good beach.
