In addition to Danowski and Costabile, former Blue Devil volunteer assistant John Galloway also was one of three goalies chosen. Danowski is one of eight attackmen picked, while Costabile is among 12 defensemen on the list.
Danowski is a veteran of the US Lacrosse program and was the Most Valuable Player at the 2009 U-19 FIL World Championship. He has been active with the U.S. National Team, including playing in the Duel in Denver versus Team Canada this past September. The NCAA's all-time leading scorer, Danowski, recently joined the coaching staff of the Blue Devils as an assistant coach. He also is a current member of the Charlotte Hounds of Major League Lacrosse and has been a four-time MLL All-Star.
Costabile also has been a mainstay with US Lacrosse as a member of the 2008 U-19 FIL World Championship squad. A 2012 graduate of Duke, Costabile was a Tewaaraton Finalist and captured by the ACC Defensive Player of the Year as well as the Lt. Donald MacLaughlin National Midfielder of the Year. The longstick midfielder graduated from Duke as the Blue Devils' all-time leader in ground balls and a four-time USILA All-America selection. He also played in the MLL, suiting up for the Long Island Lizards in 10 games and scoring three goals.
Scheduled for 1:30 p.m. EST at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista,Fla., this eighth annual event will be the first in which the Team USA men take on the reigning NCAA champion. Team USA also will square off against 2012 NCAA semifinalist Notre Dame on Saturday, Jan. 26, with Jacksonville University also scheduled to participate in the event.
The reigning world champion U.S. men's national team, which defeated Canada to win the 2010 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship, will bring 38 players to evaluate prior to tryouts for the 2014 U.S. men's national team, to be held Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 2013. At the 2012 Champion® Challenge, Team USA defeated the University of Denver 16-15 in overtime.
