No Rest for the Weary
Duke recent completed a grueling four games in 10 days stretch with an unblemished 4-0 mark. Two of the wins came against top 10 opponents as Duke defeated No. 4 Loyola 9-8 and No. 8 North Carolina 11-8. The Blue Devils also picked up victories over unranked foes Towson (12-4) and Marist (18-11). Duke's offense and defense both started to hit their strides during the four-game stretch as the starting attack unit of Jordan Wolf, Josh Dionne and Case Matheis combined for 42 points from 27 goals and 15 assists and the defensive squad held teams to just 7.75 goals per game. Overall, Duke registered 29 caused turnovers as its four opponents racked up 65 turnovers in the four games. Sophomore goaltender Kyle Turri has been outstanding in his four starts, averaging 10 saves per game and posting a .563 save percentage and a 7.87 goals against average.
Joining the Century Club
Duke head coach John Danowski joined an elite fraternity this past Saturday with the 12-4 win over Towson. Danowski captured his 100th win at Duke to become just the fourth Division I men's lacrosse coach in history to win at least 100 games with two different programs. Danowski and Virginia head coach Dom Starsia are the only active coaches to achieve the feat. In his seventh season at the helm at Duke, Danowski is 101-28 overall.
99 and Counting
With a goal and an assist against Marist, junior Christian Walsh pushed his career points total 99, one point shy of becoming the 40th Blue Devil to reach 100 career points. The Baltimore, Md., native has 65 goals and 34 assists and recently moved into a midfield role for Duke. He has 16 points this season and will join current Blue Devil Jordan Wolf on the 100 career points list.
Players of the Week
Over the course of the past four games a trio of individuals has stood out in the eyes of the Atlantic Coast Conference. After Duke's 9-8 victory over No. 4 Loyola, juniors Chris Hipps and Jordan Wolf garnered ACC Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week honors. Hipps helped anchor the defense against the Greyhounds with five ground balls and two caused turnovers. On attack, Wolf led all Duke scorers with two goals, including the game winner, and two assists against Loyola. His two assists evened the score for the Blue Devils after they had fallen behind by a goal.
Case Matheis Hitting His Stride
Rookie Case Matheis has reached a comfort level at attack with Dionne and Wolf. The Darien, Conn., native registered 15 points from nine goals and six assists in his previous four outings after scoring just two goals and two helpers in the previous six games. Matheis had his first hat trick in the win over Towson and finished with five points overall. Two days later, he chipped in three goals and three assists to help Duke beat undefeated Marist.
The Story Behind the Streak
Duke, a winner of four straight, has clamped down defensively during the streak. The Blue Devils are allowing just 7.75 goals per game in the stretch, compared to 11.50 in the first six outings. Duke has allowed 10-plus goals only once in the past four outings. Junior Brendan Fowler has upped his game even more, winning 65 percent of his faceoffs after sporting a .597 win percentage in his first six games. He also has 41 ground balls in that span to bring his total to 102 for the season. Duke's defense is holding opponents to just .237 shot percentage during the win streak, an improvement over a .327 shot percentage in the opening six games.
Duke has just three remaining regular season home games. The Blue Devils welcome Georgetown Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m. Duke hits the road to Harvard, Rutgers and Marquette in final road trips.
