AWENDAW, S.C. – The 11th-ranked Duke men’s golf team is set to begin play Sunday at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate played at the Bulls Bay Golf Club March 24-26. The 54-hole event will pit the Blue Devils against four other teams ranked in the top-25 of the most recent Golfweek Poll, including No. 12 LSU, No. 20 Auburn, No. 21 Clemson and No. 25 Wake Forest.
The Blue Devils are coming off a 10th place finish at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, highlighted by the performance of senior Brinson Paolini, who carded rounds of 75, 74, and 70 to put him in a tie for 16th place with a three over-par, 219.
Paolini, a native of Virginia Beach, Va., owns a team best 71.7 stroke average this season, while recording three top-five finishes and six top-20 performances. Paolini has already etched his name into the Duke career record book in stroke average (2nd, 72.27), rounds in the 60s (2nd, 24), even-par rounds (2nd, 20) and top-five finishes (3rd, 11).
Duke will also be represented by senior Julian Suri, who owns a 73.2 stroke average this season. Suri, a native of St. Augustine, Fla., has tallied a team-high eight under par rounds this season, which puts him in third place in the all-time Duke record book with 43 career under-par rounds. The 2012 All-American has three top-10 finishes this season, highlighted by a tie for first finish at the Rod Myers Invitational in the fall.
Senior Adam Sumrall, junior Austin Cody and freshman Mads Soegaard round out the lineup for the Blue Devils at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. Sumrall has posted a 73.4 stroke average this season, while Cody, a native of North Charleston, S.C., owns the same average after posting a two-under par, 214, at the Bash at the Beach, March 10-12.
Soegaard, listed 20th in the latest Palmer Cup rankings, carded a six-over par, 222, at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters to finish tied for 25th. Soegaard has recorded seven under-par rounds this season, highlighted by season-low 69 in the second round of the Southern Highlands.
Duke is set to begin play at the par-72, 7282 yard Bulls Bay Golf Club at 10 a.m. Sunday, and will continue play with 18 holes on both Monday and Tuesday. For live stats, visit www.golfstat.com.
