V8 Advances to Grand Final of Jessop-Whittier Cup

SAN DIEGO – The Duke varsity eight edged No. 14 Wisconsin to take third in the first run of the Jessop-Whittier Cup and will advance to Sunday’s Grand Final.

Duke lined up in a stacked field of boats in the Jessop-Whittier Cup’s B heat and finished behind only No. No. 6 USC (6:24.05) and No. 2 Cal (6:26.36) with a time of 6:35.11. That mark was the best of the season for the Blue Devils, who deployed the crew of Caroline Kiritsy (cox), Grace Cassidy, Claire Vannelli, Emily Theys, Katie Dukovich, Tara Dalton, Laura Sciarrino, Alex Stonehill and Hannah Hewitt. Those nine also finished ahead of Purdue (6:48.37) and Iowa (6:53.10) in the race.

The Duke varsity four matched the varsity eight’s performance, placing third in the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup and will also advance to Sunday’s Grand Final. The quintet of Ashleigh Anne McKinney (cox), Mary Wilson, Rachel Wolsfelt, Dana Lerro and Sydney Johnson notched a time of 7:36.40 to finish behind only USC (7:20.56) and No. 7 Washington (7:30.90) and ahead of four other teams, including San Diego (7:38.25) and Kansas State (7:44.36).

In the second varsity eight, Duke’s crew of Simone Pitre (cox), Caroline Williams, Julie Rohde, Victoria Tsamis, Katie Burke, Allison Beattie, Nicole Antoine, Sophia Staal and Kaila Perez placed in the C heat of the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy and will move on to the race’s Petite Final on Sunday. The Blue Devils finished behind USC (6:47.80) and Washington (6:58.70)

Duke begins Sunday’s racing at 8:20 a.m. in the Petite Final of the second varsity eight Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy. Duke’s varsity eight will take off at 9:20 a.m. in the Grand Final of the Jessop-Whittier Cup, while the varsity four will start at 10:20 a.m. in the Grand Final of the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup.
