Hello Duke Fans!
Today was our first day of volleyball in Europe. We played five sets against the Girls' Slovenian Junior National Team. The blue and yellow Mikasa ball took some adjusting to as it has a rough texture and less padding on the ball to soften the impact on our arms. However, we were still able to play competitively against our friendly competition.
Playing the Slovenian Junior National team was extremely exciting and we witnessed how aggressive European serving and passing can be. We were grateful for the opportunity to play such a tough and skilled team and we are very excited to build off this experience with another match tomorrow afternoon.
In the evening, we rode a gondola up the mountain of a ski resort near our hotel and enjoyed dinner at the Restaurant Koca. These Slovenians sure do know how to cook! We enjoyed a meal full of sausage, turkey, pork, beans, french fries, and salad served with pumpkin seed oil (which is very tasty!) finished with the most delicious apple streusel we have ever had! The views of Maribor from the top of the mountain restaurant were spectacular. I wish our pictures could do it justice.

Laura Williams’ Thoughts on the Day
“The Gondola ride was terrifying, but I am glad that I was in a cart with Cristina Pintilie. She took my stress level down because she was even more terrified! Dinner was good as usual. In the United States, french fries are a main part of a meal. Here they were my least favorite part, and they were still delicious!”
Duke vs Slovenian Junior National Team Update

“It was fun to see our team in action today," said head coach Jolene Nagel. "We got better as the match went on. This is a great experience for our young team. We played a talented team and this is great as we develop going into the 2013 season.” Stay tuned for updates on our next match being played tomorrow afternoon!"
