DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University junior Brendan Fowler was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year to headline the 2013 All-ACC Academic Men’s Lacrosse Team. Duke led all programs with nine selections to the squad.

Joining Fowler on the squad are Deemer Class, Dan DiMaria, Chris Hipps, Jimmy O’Neill, Josh Offit, Tommy Patterson, Christian Walsh and Jordan Wolf. It is the third honor for O’Neill, Offit, Walsh and Wolf. Duke has led the ACC in All-ACC Academic selections in each of the seven seasons under head coach John Danowski.

Fowler is the third Blue Devil and second consecutive to capture the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year award. A sociology major, he joins CJ Costabile (2012) and Max Quinzani (2010) among the winners. The honor is the latest accolade the faceoff specialist has received this season.

A USILA first team All-America choice, Fowler helped guide the Blue Devils to their second NCAA Championship. He was named the NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player after winning 20-of-28 faceoffs in the title game. The ACC coaches selected Fowler as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year award after leading the ACC at the faceoff X. A winner of 20-plus faceoffs four times this season, the Wantagh, N.Y., native also earned a spot on the ACC All-Tournament Team.

In his first season as the Duke’s primary faceoff specialist, Fowler set a NCAA single season record for faceoff victories with 339. His 209 ground balls rank second in the NCAA single season records book. Overall, Fowler won 64 percent of his faceoffs (339-of-526) and won at least 10 in 20 of 21 games.

In the NCAA Tournament, Fowler was outstanding in winning 70-of-109 draws (.642) and picked up 42 ground balls. On championship weekend, the two-sport athlete won 36 faceoffs, including the 20 against the Orange in the championship game.
